Sexual activity in creole caprine males: effect on the birth time and beginning indicators.

The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of birth time on the sexual activity beginning in male mountaineer Creole caprine and to establish if the body weight (BW) and scrotal circumference (SC) can be considered valid indicators of this moment. Two groups of 12 males born in spring and autumn, respectively, were selected. Both were transferred to the experimental module at four months age, starting the zoometric measures one week later. The sexual activity beginning (SAB) was determined by extracting the semen with artificial vagina with an female with oestrogen as enticement. At one year age the 83.3% of born at spring showed sexual activity but none of those born at autumn showed that behaviour. At eighteen months the percentages were 100% and 41.7%, respectively. The average age to the SAB for those born in autumn was 491 days and for ones of spring 380 days. Average values registered to the SAB were of 28 and 24.2 Kg. of BW and 23.6 and 23.5 cm. of SC, for autumn and spring, respectively. Age difference was also a significant factor. It is concluded that birth time has a marked effect on the SAB in creole caprine males of Tucuman province, delaying the animal conceived at contra cycle. BW and SC could be considered valid indicators for the determination of the moment when such activity is initiated.
