Sue Badger CertEd VN looks at the history and formation of the BVNA and how it is rising to the future challenges of nursing in practice. When considering the history of the BVNA it is useful to place its evolution in context by reflecting upon the birth and subsequent development of today's veterinary nurse. The first record of an individual who could be described as a veterinary nurse appears to be a Head Nurse at the Royal Veterinary College who maintained this position for over a decade in the 1930s; however, there is a mention of an organisation called the Canine Nurses Institute as early as 1908.
