Imagine a trash can full of crumpled paper next to your desk. Is this the sign of an innovative design pro cess successfully occurring? Or how about a white board covered in multi-colored scribbles? While either of these two scenarios could indicate that something creative has been going on, the fact is that a 'eureka' moment can occur anywhere and at anytime. The spark of a good idea can happen in the car, while taking a shower or even sleeping. The continued references we hear to capturing an idea on a napkin implies that design can often occur in a restaurant. Whether a design is sketched on a napkin or into a computer, the capture of an idea is essential for communicating the idea to others or as a reminder to oneself. Increasingly, computers are involved at the earliest stages of design, and the evidence points to digital product design processes as being a distinct competitive advantage at this stage and beyond. And for automotive and industrial design processes, the evidence is overwhelming.
