In subsaharan Africa, bushmeat is an important part of the population's diet. In the last fifty years, demand for game in the cities has been steadily increasing as a result of population growth and urban expansion. This article (the first of two) describes the historical context of the bushmeat trade. At present, the trade is informal, with bushmeat a relatively cheap mass consumer product. The trade is controlled by women and involves fairly long supply chains. Monitoring the zones that supply large urban areas, over time and space, observing species sold on the markets and how they are marketed (live or as dried, smoked or fresh meat) would provide indicators as to the size of the animal populations being hunted. The trade is closely integrated within rural and urban societies, and organised, in socio-economic terms, into two overlapping systems: barter, mainly in the villages, and classic commercial trading, mainly in the towns. Bushmeat enters monetary trade circuits in different ways, including sales from roadside stalls and bartering for essential products brought in by traders from the towns, which often puts hunters in debt but creates strong relationships between trading partners. The supply chain for bushmeat markets in towns is therefore a commercial system which is regulated by imperatives that are at once biological, economic and sociological.
