Volkswagen's new Scirocco special gets the styling and performance of the race car. IT WAS ABOUT this time last year that Volkswagen wowed the automotive world by revealing its concept for a mid-engined 650 PS W12-powered Mk 5 Golf GTI. Sadly, that car was a little too extreme, and unlikely ever to have reached production, but Volkswagen's latest concept creation might just be a more realistic proposition for a high-performance road car. As previously, the chosen venue was the annual Volkswagen festival at Wdrthersee in Austria, and the timing couldn't have been better. About 300 miles away, at the Nurburgring in Germany.
