THE FIRST step towards improving the performance of the 1.8T engine is undoubtedly a software upgrade. We saw last month how the REVO reprogramming of the ECU improved the output of our AGU-engined GTI by a considerable margin, increasing maximum power to 193 PS and torque to 240 Ib.ft This was enough to knock nearly a second off the 0-60 time, with similar gains seen in the in-gear times, and fuel consumption was only slightly affected, still capable of recording nearly 40 mpg on a long steady motorway run at 3000 rpm (70 mph).
