摘要

Despite legislative drives to improve the quality of care in US nursing homes, 92% of these facilities do not have sufficient staff to provide this care,1'2 Many US states have permitted the use of unlicensed personnel to administer medications in nursing homes. 'Medication technicians' (also known as medication aides, medication assistants, nurse apprentices, nursing technicians, unlicensed assistive personnel) are permitted to give medications to nursing home residents.3 Some states will allow a medication technician to administer medications regardless of route of administration (e.g. needles or medications administered via tube into any body cavity). According to state regulation, these technicians may work independently or under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and this will be dependent on the type of medication to be administered as well as the clinical status of the patient This may potentially lead to errors associated with medication administration.The aim of this study was to describe characteristics of US nursing homes which use medication technicians and to quantify the- impact of medication technicians on increasing the likelihood of medication administration errors taking place.
