In the UK, it is estimated that 77% of needle exchange outlets are within community pharmacies and that approximately equal amounts of needles and syringes are distributed from pharmacy and non-pharmacy outlets per year (14 million from each).1 It is known that 19% of community pharmacies in England and Wales and 9% in Scotland provide a needle exchange service.2'3 The term 'paraphernalia' is used to describe items used by injecting drug users (IDUs) during injection preparation and administration, and includes water, filters, spoons and acidifiers e.g. citric acid. Following the suggested link between paraphernalia sharing and hepatitis C transmission,4 in 200.3 UK law was changed to permit the supply of certain paraphernalia to reduce harm. The purpose of this study was to establish (i) how informed needle exchange (NX) pharmacists in the South West were of the new law; (ii) the support receive locally for NX activity; and (iii) whether this support extends to education and training as well as supplies, It is of interest to establish how best pharmacists can be supported in this important public health work.
