In March 2000, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) began to publish Technology Appraisals (TAGs) advising the NHS on the most cost- and clinically effective use of medicines and other healthcare interventions based on the best available evidence. Primary care trusts (PCTs) are funded to implement TAGs within 3 months of publication so trusts must have a robust system for rapidly disseminating TAGs, assessing implementation resource needs and negotiating with commissioners within a whole health community setting so that commissioners make optimum use of the available funding and that patients receive equitable access to treatments.
