摘要

A major challenge to the NHS is the lead time for a patient to obtain a general practitioner (GP) consultation. A number of government schemes have been suggested as solutions. One proposal focuses on the management of patients with minor ailments. Self-care for minor ailments needs to be promoted, enabling the public to recognise and understand that healthcare is not a simple process involving visiting the GP, but a process embracing self-care and appropriate advice from the extended circle of healthcare professionals, including pharmacists. These changes are being introduced at a time when pharmacy is being promoted as a viable alternative to visiting the doctors who are becoming increasingly concerned about their workload. Eastern Birmingham Primary Care Trust currently operates a pilot minor ailments scheme (Pharmacy Direct). The Pharmacy Direct scheme allows the supply of formulary medicines for specified minor ailments free to those exempt from prescription charges, and at the prescription charge rate for patients who are not exempt from paying prescription charges. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of non-users of the Pharmacy Direct scheme in order to determine the reasons for non-use and thus provide evidence for project development.
