There is growing recognition of the community pharmacist's role as a public health practitioner. This has developed from their traditional function as medicine supplier (ideally, to achieve safe and effective medicine use), to their now well-established roles in public health. Community pharmacy has been particularly responsive to public health initiatives in the area of substance misuse and sexual health. In addition to smoking-cessation interventions, and in response to a potential HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, community pharmacy took on board the delivery of needle-exchange services and opioid-substitution therapy (methadone) as part of a many-faceted, and ultimately successful, attempt to prevent the spread of HIV.'1' More recently we have seen developments in the community pharmacist's role in Chlamydia screening and treatment, the provision of emergency hormonal contraception, and testing for hepatitis.
