摘要

There is evidence that newly qualified doctors have 'prescription illiteracy'. Errors occur in 5% of prescriptions by doctors and are made most commonly by junior staff.1 Although a lack of theoretical knowledge can contribute to error, there are little data on other contributing factors such as poor communication skills and ignorance of the role of pharmacists as an integrated member of a multidisciplinary team,2 No study has asked pharmacists what competencies a medical student should have at graduation in order to optimise their prescribing performance. The aim of this study was to establish what pharmacy-related core competencies a new doctor should have, using a three-stage Delphi study conducted by email to the pharmacists in a university teaching hospital. This was a pilot study to demonstrate that the use of the Delphi technique could be useful in informing a medical curriculum.
