摘要

Communication with both patients and other health professionals is a key role for pharmacists, and the Pharmacy code of ethics states that, in addition to being able to communicate in English, 'competency in other languages common to the area is desirable'.l In Wales, approximately 20% of the population speaks Welsh.2 Although most of these also speak English, research has shown that bilingual patients find it easier to communicate in their first language in times of stress, for example when ill.3'4 Despite this, there is currently no formal requirement for pharmacists working in Wales to possess Welsh language skills, and there has been little research to investigate this subject area.The aim of this study is therefore to explore the knowledge and views of pharmacists and other professionals with regard to the under-researched topic of provisions for, and use of the Welsh language in the community pharmacy setting.
