Pharmaceutical care was defined 20 years ago as 'the responsible provision of drag therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve quality of life'. While the practice of pharmacy has undergone dramatic changes since then, pharmaceutical care practitioners and service commissioners still need to demonstrate the benefits or added value of services. Benefits, however, can be influenced by many factors outside the pharmacist's control, including the need for other health professionals and patients to act on pharmacists' recommendations.
