Integrated sequence of avian reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) long terminal repeat (LTR) were detected by polymerase chain reaction in a previously uncharacterized region of the right-hand third of the genome in field strains of fowl pox virus andin a vaccine strain (FPV-S) which had been withdrawn in Australia for contamination with FPV. REV LTR remnants were also detected in another vaccine strain (FPV-M) free from contamination with FPV. The nearly complete REV provirus integrated into FPV-S is infectious as shown by transfection of chick embryo fibroblasts.
