Structural transitions in C_(60) films on high temperature annealing

The discovery of fullerene C_(60) and subsequent development of carbon arc method for producing macroscopic quantities of this material, have aroused much attention to this third form of carbon. The earliest analysis by X-ray diffraction suggested that crystalline C_(60) had a hexaganal-close-packed (hcp) structure. So far, there have been many reports on the structures of C_(60) powder, single crystals and films, and the results show that the C_(60) molecules are located on the sites of a face-centred-cubic (fcc) lattice at room temperature. There exists a first-order phase transition from fcc phase to sc phase with critical transition temperature of 249 K. Recently, the coexistence of fcc phase and hcp phase in the C_(60) films has been found, andhcp C_(60) single crystals have been successfully grown. However, the effects of deposition conditions on the structures of C_(60) films and the structural changes by exposing the film to various experimental fators are seldom studied. In this note we report our results on the X-ray diffractions on C_(60) films, and discuss the structural transitions caused by high temperature annealing.
