Different species of mushrooms, require different things to cause pins. One group of these mushrooms require casing. Psilocybe cubensis requires casing. What happens with this group of mushrooms that need casing is this. The mycelium continues to growas long as there are proper nutrients. When this mycelium enters into an area where there are no nutrients, it throws the mycelium into a shock. It thinks that it has run out of feeding ground, and changes its mode into producing mushrooms to continue the next generation. This same thing will happen to mycelium growing on grain in grain jars. If the mycelium grows into an area of water on the side of the jar, it will throw the mycelium into this shock because the water is not as rich as the grain. This same thing can happen with other types of grows.
