The fatigue strength of a T-joint is greatest when there is full penetration and two-sided fillet welding [1]. For structures with a closed section, it is often the case that the joint can be welded only one side. The authors propose a back bead welding process, which was found to achieve full penetration and two-sided fillet bead without backing plate and without root gap by one-sided single bevel groove welding. As this process can be viewed as bulldozing out the molten pool from the groove side to its backside, the authors call this BOB (Bulldozed-Out Bead) welding process. In this study its fundamental characteristics were investigated.
