It was a source of great frustration to Ray and Graham Pole that the outstanding performance they were achieving from their 420-sow breeding herd was not reflected in their returns. They were rearing nearly 24 pigs a sow annually - but they were spending 60,000 pound -70,000 pound a year to treat haemophilus pneumonia in the finishing herd. "We were having to inject individual pigs as well as medicating the feed. This lost 6 pound-7 pound a pig, adding 7p-8p a kg to our production costs," says Ray Pole.
