Oxidation and reduction treatment of photorefractive Fe:LiNbO_3 crystal

Lithium niobate (LiNbO_3, LN) crystal is an important type of photorefractive materials, its photorefractive property can be improved effectively by doping. For example, the optical damage resistance and the photorefractive sensitivity of LN crystal can be increased by doping Mg and Fe, respectively. Modest treatment of oxidation and reduction can change the valence state of the doped ions and the other defects' distribution, and therefore affect the photorefractive effect of the crystal. We have grown the LN crystal doped with Fe (Fe:LN) using the Czochralski method. After treating of oxidation and reduction the photorefractive properties of the Fe:LN crystal varied greatly. This note introduces the technological conditions of the oxidation and reduction treatments and the variation of the photorefractive properties after these treatments, and explores preliminarily the mechanism of the oxidation and reduction.
