Relation between photorespiration and photoinhibition in cotton leaves

Photorespiration is a well-known CO_2-evolution process accompanying photosynthetic CO_2 uptake, whereas its physiological significance is still not well understood. As already reported, severe photoinhibition occurred in the leaves or chloroplasts exposed to strong light in the absence of CO_2 upon suppression of photorespiration, while photoinhibition could be prevented by the supply of CO_2 at a concentration near the compensation point. Based on these results, it has been suggested that photorespiration in C_3 plants can be effective in preventing photoinhibition under strong light with no or low CO_2, because it can dissipate excessive light energy. In the work presented here, we investigated whether, photorespiration could alleviate photoinhibition of photosynthesis in cotton leaves upon exposure to strong light in the presence of normal CO_2, and the possible mechanisms were discussed.
