摘要

THE application of phytolith study in geology in the world has experienced a history of over 30 years. The earliest application of phytolith study to marine geology was made by Smithson when he made a study on the submarine sediments in Leigwy Bay. Later, he made the analysis of phytoliths in the neritic sediments in Ariake Bay in Kyushu, Japan. Dumitrica analysed the phytoliths in the cores drilled in the Mediterranean Sea. Phytoliths in the deepsea cores collected during the 47th (1979) and 54th (1982) excursions of the "Deepsea Drilling Projects" were also analysed and studied. And based on the results of phytolith analysis of the deepsea cores, the palaeo-wind directions and palaeo-vegetation of North Africa during the period from the Miocene tothe Pliocene were reconstructed.
