THE giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect in magnetic multilayer has been the subject of intense investigation since its discovery. Various theories, including semiclassical theory and quantum theory, have been developed to deal with the GMR. A generalview on the microscopic mechanism of the GMR is the spin-dependent scattering. The origin of the GMR comes from the asymmetry of spin-dependent scattering, i.e. the scattering potential is related to spin. However, there is some debate as to the originof the spin-dependence of the GMR in the magnetic multilayers.
