This paper describes the development of an experimental GHTA welding apparatus for use in an aircraft-borne simulated space environment (flying laboratory). The objective of the experiments was to investigate arc discharge phenomena and melting phenomena in the simulated space environment created for around 20 sec during parabolic flight of the carrier aircraft. The proposed experimental GUTA welding apparatus was used to perform spot welding experiments of stainless steel plates and melt run girth welding experiments of stainless steel pipes. The results obtained may be summarised as follows.1 Arc discharge occurrence and maintenance are possible in a simulated space environment, and GHTA spot welding of stainless steel plates and GHTA melt run girth welding of stainless steel pipes can be performed in this environment.2 The arc discharge phenomena found during ORTA spot welding of stainless steel plates and GHTA melt run girth welding of stainless steel pipes are insensitive to the effect of gravity.3 The weld metals produced during GHTA spot welding of stainless steel plates and GHTA melt run girth welding of stainless steel pipes in a simulated space environment show no hanging phenomenon.4 As gravity increases, a small depression forms in the molten pool just under the electrode during welding and hanging of the weld metal after solidification increases.5 The results obtained during tensile tests of butt welded joints indicate that full-strength, defect-free butt welded joints can be produced by GRTA girth welding of stainless steel pipes in a simulated space environment.
