An assessment of in-situ rock stress ratio in Hong Kong

To provide design parameters for the five new Mass Transit Railway Corporation railway lines in Hong Kong, a total of 124 hydraulic fracturing tests were carried out to determine the magnitude and orientation of the in-situ rock stresses along the proposed tunnel alignment. The main objective of the in-situ rock stress measurements is to check that the stresses will not cause undue problems in tunnel excavation or support. This paper assesses the in-situ rock stress ratio based on the hydraulic fracturing tests conducted in 27 boreholes within Hong Kong. When the individual principal stress magnitudes were examined alone, it seems that they are considerably scattering at shallow depth without any unique relationship. However, if the first stress invariant is plotted against the principal stress of each test, a unique stress ratio (horizontal principal stress divided by vertical principal stress) with depth within a range of 1.4-2.5 is found. The finding of this ratio is important when analysing failure initiation of underground rock excavation in Hong Kong.
