Cross-linking of ethylene vinyl silane copolymers

Ethylene silane copolymer was used to study the cross-linking reactions in the presence of moisture and catalyst. Controlled diffusion of water coupled with micro FTIR profiling technique led to an estimation of diffusion of water and/or cross-linking. The gel content was measured as a function of diffusion depth for water. The profile of the spectral variation and gel followed the classical diffusion equation to a first order approximation. The dynamic mechanical response of the silane copolymer cured to different levels was studied and the changes in the dynamic storage modulus were shown to follow a parabolic relation with cure time indicating the validity of a first order approximation to the transport process. The complexities in a rigorous mathematical approach to the moisture cure process taking into account all molecular events occurring in the polymer are also discussed. The merits of an empirical relation to estimate cure time for engineering applications are given.
