High strength wire nets appear to have a significant effect on fracture and other properties of a polymer based composite. A successful attempt, first in its class, was made to weave 3500 MPa wire to a net structure. This structure provides unique locking with the matrix thereby improving reinforcement-matrix load transfer. Under certain conditions, a hyper-plasticity of 30 percent and more tensile elongation is present. This number is six or more times greater than the individual elongations of the net or polyester matrix. More study is under progress to understand this unique behavior. The new composite is ideal for applications where high damage tolerance is required. Future work would use 3500 - 4500 MPa (500-650 KSI) wire nets with a coating of soft polymer to further improve impact resistance. The work is under a patent application.
