U.S.-based American Superconductor Corporation announced that its high temperature superconductor (HTS) was used in a magnetically levitated train system operated by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) that it said reached speeds of 500 km per hour (approximately 311 miles per hour) during a test run. The magnetically levitated tain system attained those speeds while levitated about 10 centimeters (four inches) above its 'track," an AMSC press release said. The superconductor electromagnets are used as the lifting component in JR Central's "maglev" train system and the test runs are an important step in the commercialization process for maglev electric transportation systems, it said. It noted that the procedure for the running test, a benchmark for the project, included the replacement of one of the eight LTS electromagnets on JR Central's maglev train with the prototype HTS electromagnet.
