The pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) is one of the most valuable freshwater carnivorous fishes in Europe. It is an attractive game fish. As a top predator it is a key species in the biomanipulation of natural waters and it is a valuable fish for human consumption. The market exists for all life stages of pikeperch. The majority of market-size pikeperch originate from freshwater fisheries and natural waters. The traditional method of pikeperch production is to rear the fish in polyculture with cyprinids.The role of the carnivorous fish is to eliminate the undesirable prey fish, which are feed competitors of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio). The success of pikeperch culture is mainly dependent on the quantity of prey of the appropriate size. This method is unpredictable and the yields change from year to year. Rearing pikeperch with dry, compound feed is the key to intensive culture that will continuously produce market size fish, but knowledge on weaning methods and nutritional requirements are weak.
