Pearl culture technology provides advantages for future alternatives of regional development, as well as motivation for further research on resource recovery and conservation. This hypothesis concentrates on the "abalone region," west coast of Baja California peninsula, Mexico (Figure 1). It was founded, as a first requirement, on the validation of abalone pearl culture technology. The Fondos Mixtos CONACYTBC 2004 (Mexico) gave support to perform pilot experiments in agreement with a small private farmer (Productos Marinos Baja, S.A. de C.V.) in the Ejido Erendira, Baja California (Figure 1). We intend to contribute information on the technology of pearl culture in abalone, which is scarce in comparison to pearl oysters, round pearls in particular. The project aims to establish management plans to regionally insert abalone pearl culture into development scenarios in the Baja California peninsula. We explore the possible ideal conditions for success, and discuss some arguments about risks and best choices for continuation.
