MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH cows that can sort out items they like and leave behind those items they don't like was early in my scientific career. It was in an experiment I was involved in with a dozen beef cows studying vitamin requirements. The grain ration was fed twice daily with forage and consisted of a mixture of canola meal, rolled barley and a premix of vitamins and minerals. All the cows readily consumed their grain mix except one cow.
