Auto makers constantly worry about their street cred based on what the so-called "buff books," or enthusiast magazines, say about their products. And because automotive executives crave to be annointed as authentic car guys, they're loath to build cars that are merely designed for the masses. As a result, too many vehicles a tuned toward what enthusiasts want, rather than for the people who actually are going to buy them. And yet, according to most marketing experts, enthusiasts only comprise about 8% of the buying public, Guess what? I'm part of that 8%. I like to drive hard, I love to drive fast. I want quick, nimble cars. The faster and nimbler the better. Give me a racetrack, and I'm in heaven. But most people don't want what I want in a car.
