OVER the past 25 years, a number of deserving individuals have been named "Apple Grower of the Year." The long list of industry pioneers and innovators includes John Rice, Grady Auvil, Evan Milburn, Mitch Lynd, and many others. Just this past year, Jeff Leonardini of Washington Fruit and Produce joined this elite group, thanks to his efforts to develop a long-term integrated pest management program and his focus on looking ahead to where the industry needs to be in the coming years. It's time to addanother name to that list. The Apple Grower of the Year award, presented by American/ Western Fruit Grower and sponsored by DuPont Crop Protection, is designed to recognize growers who are skilled, progressive horticulturists, and who demonstrate leadership in their industry, whether it's experimenting with new production systems and varieties or playing an active role in an association. These growers go to great lengths to provide the highest-quality fruit possible, while supporting the industry on a broader scale.
