I hope you are all having a good convention, working hard and playing hard, as we like to say about WSCA. Working hard and playing hard - of course, this is a cliche, but it's a cliche that I'm willing to repeat because I believe that it speaks to an important set of values, a set of values for which this organization stands and for which our conventions are known. We see evidence of our hard work in the high quality of our journals and we've seen it in the panels and papers presented over the past few days. The people who make up this organization take the work of communication scholarship seriously and through various forms of exchange we encourage one another to do this work well. But as "work hard, play hard" suggests, we also know how to have fun. What further evidence do we need than last night's "Speech Comm. Prom?" When I think about "playing hard," however, what comes to mind is not just our annual dance or trips to breweries and ski resorts - although don't get me wrong, those things do come to mind - but in addition to these social events, and perhaps even more important, I think of the community we have established and that we continually recreate at these annual gatherings. We are a community of people who care about our relationships with one another. We recognize that the personal - the friendships we build, the social support we provide one another - is just as important as our scholarship and so as an organization we have institutionalized opportunities to build on and celebrate this aspect of our community.
