The Roles of China and Northeast Asian Countries in Future World Economy

摘要

The author is professor and deputy director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Since the end of the 1980s, the economic development of many countries were fraught with difficulties. In sharp contrast, the economies of East Asian countries, especially Northeast Asian countries, were growing with full steam. Those countries, therefore, have constituted a new development center of world economy and another locomotive to push for the development of world economy. This paper predicts the economic development of Northeast Asian countries in the coming 5 to 6 years and their potential influences upon the world economic configuration at the turn of the centuries. The Northeast Asian region, as discussed in this paper, geographically covers northeast China, Japan, the Republic of Korea(ROK), Democratic Peoples's Republic of Korea(DPRK), Mongolia, Siberia and the Far East of Russia region. However, given the inadequate data, the national data of China and Russia are used to shed light on the economic status, especially the overall national strength, of northeast China and Siberian area as well as the Far East region in general.
