Characterization of lithium niobate single crystal diffused with magnesium by DTA

Based on the report given by J. E. Mid winter that the refractive indices n_o and n_e of lithium niobate doped with magnesium (MgO:LiNbO_3) are lower than those of LiNbO_3, S. Sudo et al. achieved for the first time the core-cladding wave guide structure of LiNbO_3 single crystal fibers by using a Mg-ion indiffusion process in 1987. In this note, the Curie temperature of the Mg-diffused LiNbO_3 single crystal is investigated for the first time by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA) It is found that the Curie temperature of the Mg-diffused LiNbO_3 single crystal decreases with the increase of diffusion time at first, but beyond a limit, the Curie temperature starts to increase again and appears the second-phase transition point. It is well known that LiNbO_3 has only one Curie temperature; therefore, the second-phase transition point is probably the phase transition point of a new compound in MgO-rich layer of the Mg-diffused surface layer. These conclusions are proved further by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD).
