Aviation gasoline, used to power small piston-engine prop planes rather than jets, is one of the last transportation fuels to contain lead, but Royal Dutch Shell has announced that after 10 years of research, it has developed an unleaded alternative that does not result in reduced performance. Avgas represents a tiny niche in the transportation fuel market; according to the EIA, US production in 2012 was only 4.86MM bbl for the entire year—by comparison, US refiners churn out that volume of jet fuel every three days. According to one trader, the low volume is offset by "huge" profit margins, but the small size of the market, together with the fact that exports are complicated by the expense of cleaning lead from the tanks afterwards, makes it a product that interests only the majors.
