摘要

True potato seed is an alternative for traditional method of potato cultivation through tubers which reduces the burden of dependency on seed tubers. Hybrid 92PT-27 is a high yielding and late blight resistant true potato seed population. It was released for commercial cultivation in eastern region of India in 2007 to meet the growing need of healthy planting material. The transplanted crop of this hybrid population gives 18-20 t/ha tuber yield with seed rate of only 150 g/ha. The hybrid population produces more uniform tubers, higher marketable tuber yield and possesses good keeping quality than the existing TPS populations. It is also free from viruses. Considering salient features of this population, Crop Improvement Section of Central Potato Research Station, Patna is actively involved in production and supply of true seeds as well as seedlings to cater to the needs of farmers and institutions. Annually 4.0 kg true potato seed is being produced and supplied to farmers at reasonable rate. Farmers are being imparted training on potato cultivation through true potato seeds. Farmers are happy about this hybrid population as they get disease free crop with higher tuber yield. Their experience is that the harvested produce of this population fetcheshigher price as it is sold for seed purpose to other farmers. Presently, the demand for true seeds of this population is increasing especially from eastern U. P., Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal and to meet growing requirements the efforts are being madeto enhance the production of true potato seed.
