摘要

Lignite which is after hard coal the second most important solid fuel produced and utilized in Poland, plays a very important role in the Polish energy industry. Extraction of lignite has a very long tradition. Significant achievements and large experience which has been gained during many years of mining operations, place the Polish lignite mining industry in a leading position in Europe. The paper presents the current state of the Polish industry, including operating mines and volume of production and other important production indicators. The attention was put on the significance of lignite for the Polish energy industry, especially for power production. On the basis of the information about lignite reserves and the national power industry policy, the future of the lignite extraction is presented.
