Ample media coverage and extensive expert discussions emphasise that the ecological requirements to be met by projects involving interference with nature and landscape have grown dramatically over the past few years. Thus, the question of how Rhenish lignite mining operations respond to these ever rising requirements seems perfectly legitimate. After all, the use of several thousand hectares of fertile and intensively used cultivated land is inevitably linked to interference with high-quality ecological structures. This interference must be reduced to the extent possible or compensated.
