The genesis of DeepStar can be traced to what was a rather straightforward— yet enormously perplexing—dilemma: Operators were leasing more acreage in deeper waters and were puzzled over how to produce the reserves once discovered. Enter a delegation of engineers of then-Texaco, who met in early 1991 to examine a changing tide in the Gulf of Mexico: Their company and the industry as a whole were moving beyond the well-understood Miocene plays of the shelf to the uncertainties of deepwater. Recognizing that deepwater exploration and production posed enormous technical challenges, these Texaco engineers began laying the groundwork for the development of an entirely new suite of technologies that would be required in this new energy frontier.
