In any overview of the Australasian poultry industry the logical starting point would be the Australian poultry meat sector, which is dominated by broiler production. The Australian Chicken Meat Federation (ACMF) estimates a retail value of A 3.5 dollar billion in 2007/8 with 470.6 million birds slaughtered producing 800,100 tonnes of broiler meat. The Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics (AJ3ARE) at its Outlook 2010 conference held in Canberra from 2-3 March, 2010, revealed encouraging statistics for the Australian poultry industry. According to a report (Poultry Outiookto 2014-5) by ABARE analyst James Fell, continued growth is forecast. The Australian Poultry Industry has experienced strong growth over the past 20 years with production increasing on average by around 4% a year. This pattern is expected to continue over the short to medium term. Australian poultry production is forecast to reach 910 kilotonnes in 2010-11, a continued increase of 4% on the previous year, the report revealed. Over the medium term, Australian poultry production is projected to increase by 13%, compared with 2010-11, to reach 1030 kilotonnes by 2014-15. The poultry industry is highly concentrated with two major processors supplying more than 70% of the domestic broiler market. Chicken meat production accounts for around 96% of total production of poultry meats.
