Organic trace minerals are important components in poultry diets. Bioavailability measures the extent to which trace minerals can be absorbed and utilised by the animal. Mineral bioavailability does not necessarily correlate with solubility. Rather, bioavailability is best measured in the bird, where it counts. Zinc, copper, manganese and a number of other essential trace minerals are required for the proper development, maintenance and health of animals. As such, these minerals are supplemented in virtually all animal diets, either as inorganic trace mineral (ITM) salts, and/or organic trace minerals (OTMs). OTMs are widely reported to be more bioavailable than ITMs. One advantage of their greater bioavailability is that they can be fed at lower levels than ITMs, and would therefore be expected to have reduced environmental impact.
