摘要

The poultry industry has grown considerably in Central America and Mexico in the past decade, as it has done in the rest of the world. Its modernised industry is now efficient, productive, and successful. This particular region, however, feels the competition from abroad, particularly from the north and south. The Central American poultry industry is vital to the economy of this region, contributing products of high nutritional value and low cost to approx. 45 million Central Americans. Within the region, the poultry sector contributes about 12% to the gross domestic product of agriculture, and 2% of the gross regional domestic product. Poultry companies have invested heavily in operational infrastructure. The current annual investment exceeds US$90million. These investments have contributed significantly towards generating jobs. Thus, this sector ensures direct employment to about 90,000 workers, as well as over 750,000 indirect jobs.
