Infectious bronchitis (IB) is a viral disease caused by a coronavirus. The virus attacks the epithelial cells of the upper and lower respiratory tract, damaging the trachea and air sacs and predisposing birds to secondary bacterial infection. Septicemia and airsacculitis caused by E. coli are common in near-market age broiler chickens and are a leading cause of condemnation of broiler carcasses at processing plants. Based on the author's hands-on experience, subacute to chronic tracheitis is a commonlesion in broilers with E. coli septicemia and airsacculitis, and IB virus is detected at a very high rate in lesioned tracheas. The role of IB virus in E. coli septicemia and airsacculitis in near-market age broilers seems to be overlooked by some in the broiler industry. Realising the role of this virus is an important element in developing a strategy to prevent late outbreaks of E. coli septicemia and airsacculitis in broilers. Infectious bronchitis virus is widespread, and therefore protecting broilers against the virus through proper vaccination and biosecurity is critical.
