Early in 2012 the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a Proposed Rule for the New Poultry Inspection System (NPIS). Inspection in turkey and broiler plants emphasises on reducing pathogens and intensifying surveillance. The modernisation of inspection in turkey and broiler plants is intended to place greater emphasis on reducing pathogens and intensifying internal company surveillance allowing FSIS On-Line Inspectors to be more flexible with regard to oversight of quality. The emphasis would shift from the current traditional organoleptic approach which has been in existence virtually unchanged since the second decade of the last century to a science-based programme.
