The first few hours following a spill are the most critical, especially for inland spills that could enter a watercourse and spread over a large area, making recovery and cleanup difficult. While controlling the source and containing the spill are the first orders of business, a significant: effort is made to recover as much of the spill as possible before it makes contact with sensitive environmental receptors. Many of the techniques used in recovering oil in marine spills can be applied to spills on freshwater, but there are a number of differences that must be considered - some subtle, some not so subtle.
