Changes to the EU "Seveso Directive" on major industrial hazards, prompted by a series of European disasters, cleared first reading in the European on 4 July. But Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom is resisting demands for a major overhaul. The commissioner pointed out that "Seveso III"-the most recent version of the legislation-has only bee in force for three years. Commenting on 55 amendments demanded by MEPs, she said in Strasbourg: "The Commission does not intend to move from Seveso II to Seveso III at this point in time."
