Core to modernisation policy in the UK is the close integration of social work with health in policy, research and practice across a range of health and social care arenas. This reflects the international concern with tapping the enormous social contribution to health, thereby promising major benefits to individuals and society. Thus, social work values of empowerment, social inclusion and antidiscriminatory practice, consonant with social perspectives, are central to this enterprise. These also, however, index far-reaching differences between social work and health in terms of their respective remits, theoretical understandings of need, knowledge base and research traditions.
