Did you get to the beach this summer? Smell the ozone? In the heyday of the ozone-is-good-for-you movement in the late 19th century,seaside ozone was a big attraction.In Australia,as in other countries,there were ozone hotels and ozone cafes and in the 20th century,as the belief lingered on,a hospital was built in my suburb and its recuperative sea air was praised.Of course,much of what we smelled as 'ozone'was actually a range of organo-sulfur compounds produced by anaerobic fermentation in the seaweed on the beach.Substances like dimethyl sulfide and disulfide have been identified as contributing to the healthy (?)tang in the air.
